Astrobiology as a framework for investigating antibiotic susceptibility: a study of Halomonas hydrothermalis.

Physical and chemical boundaries for microbial multiplication on Earth are strongly influenced by interactions between environmental extremes. However, little is known about how interactions between multiple stress parameters affect the sensitivity of microorganisms to antibiotics. Here, we assessed how 12 distinct permutations of salinity, availability of an essential nutrient (iron) and atmos...

A blueprint of ectoine metabolism from the genome of the industrial producer Halomonas elongata DSM 2581T

The halophilic γ-proteobacterium Halomonas elongata DSM 2581(T) thrives at high salinity by synthesizing and accumulating the compatible solute ectoine. Ectoine levels are highly regulated according to external salt levels but the overall picture of its metabolism and control is not well understood. Apart from its critical role in cell adaptation to halophilic environments, ectoine can be used ...

Draft Genome Sequence of Halomonas hydrothermalis MTCC 5445, Isolated from the West Coast of India

We announce here the draft genome sequence of Halomonas hydrothermalis MTCC 5445, a halophilic bacterium of the class Gammaproteobacteria. It was isolated from the sea coast of Aadri, Veraval, Gujarat, India. Its genome contains genes for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a biodegradable polymer that can be used as a substitute for petroleum plastics.

Synthesis of the compatible solute ectoine in Virgibacillus pantothenticus is triggered by high salinity and low growth temperature.

The quantification of the intracellular concentration of ectoine in Virgibacillus pantothenticus revealed that the production of this compatible solute is triggered either by an increase in the external salinity or by a reduction in the growth temperature. This finding reflects increased transcription of the ectoine biosynthetic operon (ectABC) under both environmental conditions.

Systems metabolic engineering of Corynebacterium glutamicum for production of the chemical chaperone ectoine

BACKGROUND The stabilizing and function-preserving effects of ectoines have attracted considerable biotechnological interest up to industrial scale processes for their production. These rely on the release of ectoines from high-salinity-cultivated microbial producer cells upon an osmotic down-shock in rather complex processor configurations. There is growing interest in uncoupling the productio...
